On August 22-24, the 15th BRICS Leaders' Meeting was held in Johannesburg, South Africa. The meeting announced the official launch of the expansion agenda, and six new members will officially join the organization on January 1 next year. Prior to this expansion, the land area of the BRICS countries accounted for 26.46% of the world's total territory, and their population accounted for 41.93% of the world's total population. In 2021, the total economic output of the BRICS countries accounted for approximately 25.24% of the world, and the total trade volume accounted for 17.9% of the world. In 2022, the voting rights of the BRICS countries in the World Bank were 14.06%, and their total share in the International Monetary Fund was 14.15%. After this expansion, the BRICS cooperation mechanism is expected to become an important platform for international energy policy coordination, promote closer energy partnership among member countries, and promote the "the Belt and Road" to become a key area for global oil and gas investment. The accession of traditional oil producing countries will bring a new atmosphere in the energy field to the organization.
